Something, anything

It’s good to post. Or to write. Something, anything. Just to remind yourself that the little “Publish” button still works.

It would be an understatement to say it’s been a busy few months but I’ll spare you the deeply personal but yet stultifyingly dull details of everything which has gone on.

Instead, I’m going to show you part of my commute…

it beats queuing in traffic for a roundabout. 15 mins seaside drive to a picturesque town. Then 10 mins back road spin to a business park.

So this morning I had a two and a half hour commute. There’s nothing like a 300km journey on motorways to let your mind wander. I found myself realising that if you were to make a 150 minute long game with exactly the same rules as driving (a) you’d have the worlds dullest game and/or (b)you’d have a commentary on the nature of travel.

Basically driving on a motorway consists of following a set of simple game style rules:

  • Is the car moving fast enough? If not go faster, if too fast, slow down.
  • Are we too close to the car ahead. Pass or slow down.
  • Lane changing excitement!
  • Super extra game play element available at the coffee and Danish scummy half way stop.

Guidebook paranoia

One of the most popular travel guidebooks for south east asia is the Loney Planet. I see it hanging out of backpacks in busses and planes all over the place here.

It’s got this big warning about the border crossing from Thailand to Cambodia at Poipet telling you there’s scams and that you’re going to get ripped off and to be oh so careful. (more…)

Bangkok

So we made it to Bangkok. Left Ireland at 16:00 on Sunday and then via London and Mumbai made it here at 19:00 or so local time. Long trip and we’re both knackered meaning we spend an extra day here to localise and enjoy the luxury before heading out to Cambodia. (more…)
